MLK Jr. Day

Last night on our way to church, we explained to Emilia who Martin Luther King, Jr. was and why he has a day dedicated to him.  We said he was very important in getting equal rights for everyone since white and black people used to go to separate schools, there was separation at movie theaters, restaurants, buses, etc.

We explained that was how it was not that long ago like when Poppy (my dad) went to school.  So then she asked if Poppy went to the white school or the brown school (I guess I should explain that this goes back a couple of years to Emilia saying she didn't have any black friends.  So we named a few of her friends and she said that they aren't black, they're brown.)  I said that he went to the white school.  Then she asked if I was sure since Poppy's skin is tan and that's closer to brown than white.  Out of the mouth of babes.

Bus rider

Emilia loves riding the bus home and gets to do it every other Friday when I'm off.  Since I had the New Year's holiday on Monday, she also rode the bus on Monday.  Chris found this note in her backpack to take to school on Tuesday.

"Today can Emilia ride the bus home. Love you, Mommy K2"

Hilarious.  First of all, she's only in kindergarten so if no one is there to pick her up at home, then she has to ride the bus back to school.  Secondly, I think her teacher would know she wrote this by the handwriting but the "Love you, Mommy" at the end is a dead giveaway!!

2012 Resolutions

So here's my list of resolutions for the year.

1) Work out 3 days a week.  I'm following the 9 week Couch to 5K program on my iPhone. I'll also keep going to a yoga or Pilates class.

2) Wake up early to do Goal #1.  This means 4:15am for 2 or 3 days a week.

3) Celebrate our 11th Anniversary in March since I was out of town for our 10th.

4) Give Emilia and Beau fun birthday parties.

5) Help Chris around the house more.  He cooks, he cleans, he takes care of the kids after school.

6) Read at least 12 new books, probably on my iPhone.  Maybe I should make a resolution to read 2 real books that I have stacked up and 10 iPhone books.

7) Visit Cloudcroft, NM to see Bethanee, Marsha and Bill.

8) Visit Seattle to see Stephanie, Brian and Jake.

9) Take my lunch to work and only buy it once a week.  We make Emilia do it and we should too!

10) Chris and I want to Run through the Woods on Thanksgiving 2012 (which goes back to Goal #1)

The best presents come in small packages-- wrapped in several boxes with lots of tape, paper and chains!

Balls!!  Plus a container with a backboard to keep them picked up.

Christmas 2011

Emilia was up bright and early (1:30am) since she was so excited to see what Santa brought her.  So she woke up again at 5am so I let her open the presents in her stocking.  Chris and Beau finally got up around 6:30am so we opened all the presents before we went to church.  Beau received many Chuggington trains and tracks and Emilia got Kalani, the American Girl from Hawaii, with clothes, pets, books and a brush for her dolls.

This is the best picture I could get before Beau wanted to open presents.
